Tick-Borne Diseases in Dogs: 6 Dangerous Ones

March 2, 2023

By Elizabeth Racine, DVM

According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, ticks are found throughout the United States and many tick species have dramatically expanded their range in recent years. Ticks on dogs aren’t just a nuisance—they can also transmit some dangerous diseases. To keep your client’s dogs protected, it’s important to understand the risks of tick bites and common tick-borne diseases they transmit.

Read this article from Great Pet Care to take a look at six of the most common tick-borne illnesses in the United States and how they can impact a dog’s health.

In addition to preventive medications, be sure to advise your clients to thoroughly examine their dog for ticks after spending time in wooded areas, tall grassy meadows, or other areas where ticks are commonly found. Ticks on dogs must be attached for hours to days in order to transmit disease, so removing a tick as soon as possible can help prevent tick-borne illnesses in dogs.
