National Veterinary Technician Week is October 11-17! Vet techs are vital in helping to keep pets happy and healthy!

In 1993, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) established National Veterinary Technician Week. This annual week of celebration recognizes veterinary nurses and technicians for their contributions in pet healthcare.

As we honor veterinary technicians this week, here is a look at how to become a veterinary technician, and some of the work vet techs do on a daily basis to provide care to animals.

What does a veterinary technician do?
As an important member of the veterinary team, veterinary technicians have been trained and educated in the care and handling of animals and in many laboratory and clinical procedures. While work settings do vary, most veterinary technicians work for private practices providing care to small, companion animals. In a clinical setting, technicians can complete tasks such as preforming laboratory procedures, preparing animals and equipment for surgeries, educating pet owners, and much more. While a veterinary technician can lend a helping hand during procedures and other various tasks around the clinic, they must work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

Interested in working with a certain type of animal or receiving extra training in a particular veterinary field? Veterinary technicians can have a career specialty such as working with exotic animals or in animal dentistry. Vet techs are not limited to working in a clinical setting either. Zoos, aquariums, and even the military have veterinary technician opportunities available.

How does one become a veterinary technician?
Typically, veterinary technicians obtain an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology once completing their high school education. Technicians must also pass a credentialing examination and, in some states, complete continuing education courses to keep their licenses active.
