Feel-good Feline Protection Against FeLV

October 6, 2023

Feline leukemia affects 3% of cats in single-cat households, but is the second leading cause of death, killing 85%1 of persistently infected felines within three years of diagnosis. Complicating matters, infected cats are subject to anemia or lymphoma, and it suppresses the immune system, often leading to deadly infections. Thankfully infection rates have dropped over recent years thanks to effective vaccines, screening, and proactive veterinary care, including the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) classification of FeLV as a core vaccination for cats up to one year.

But for many practitioners (and needle-shy cats) this presents just another injection that a patient must endure. Current core vaccination standards for cats include feline herpesvirus (causative agent of feline viral rhinotracheitis), calicivirus, panleukopenia, rabies, and FeLV. For many practices, this can mean up to three separate injections, longer visits, and more stress on their patients. Combination vaccines, such as TruFel Ultra HC2P-FeLV, can help alleviate some of that stress by reducing the number of injections while providing complete coverage for kitten series and annual vaccination protocols.

While vaccination is crucial, some cats may experience anxiety or discomfort during the process. Elanco TruFel Ultra FeLV vaccines are designed to minimize the pain and stress associated with vaccination, ensuring the well-being of your feline patients Here are some key reasons why Elanco TruFel FeLV vaccines stand out:

  • (½ mL Volume) Elanco TruFel Ultra HC2P-FeLV vaccine uses half the volume of traditional vaccines and, because it is available as a combination vaccine, it reduces the overall number of injections, in addition to making those injections more comfortable. TruFel Ultra FeLV is the only low-volume FVRCP+FeLV combination available. It's also the 1st and only low volume FVRCP vaccine with exclusive dual-strain calicivirus protection.
  • (Fewer needle sticks) Visiting the veterinarian can be a stressful experience for cats. With fewer and more comfortable injections, TruFel Ultra, can reduce stress levels, creating a positive veterinary care experience all around.
  • (PureFil Technology) Elanco’s exclusive process for creating our highly purified 1/2ml Ultra vaccines reduces proteins and is designed to decrease risk of reaction and create a more comfortable vaccination.

Delivering a happier clinical experience

Elanco offers happier clinical experiences through tailored vaccines that reduce stress and improve comfort, but other resources such as Fear Free® and the Cat Friendly Practice® (CFP) programs are spearheading endeavors to minimize stress during veterinary care for cats and their caregivers by offering tools and education to create a better vet visit for your feline patients practice wide.

Ultimately, reducing the stress of vaccinations is an easy and great first step that any practice can put into practice using TruFel Ultra FELV vaccines. Not only can you help meet the standards of both organizations, but you may also provide noticeable comfort to your feline patients.
