Laparotomy sponges are used mostly during abdominal and thoracic surgery or in deep wounds to absorb fluids; however, they can also be used to “wall off” the surgical site. The friction of their coarse fibers also allows laparotomy sponges to be used to retract slippery visceral organs. These sponges are radiopaque.
