Pneumothorax sets are used to treat tension or spontaneous pneumothorax which is air in the thoracic cavity. The polyurethane catheter is placed with a direct puncture between the 7th and 8th rib. It is always important that when the catheter is introduced that there is a closed stopcock on the end opposite that is being inserted to stop the intake of air into the thoracic cavity. It works best to pull the skin forward before puncture, the skin will help seal off an external air from entering once it is released. After the tube is secured, bandaged, suction will be applied via a continuous suction unit, manual syringe technique or via a Heimlich One-Way Valve (HV100). Design allows rapid placement in an emergency. Luer lock connector on end.
